Around the Market thru 3/11

One of the things I really miss during winter are affordable and high quality bell peppers.  Grocery stores selling $1.99/peppers???! Are you kidding me?

Red bells right now are 99 cents each, and they look great.

If you like banana bread as I like banana bread, when you see a box in a corner like this you get a little excited.

Tulips are in season - no excuse not to bring some home for your table. They are gorgeous and a great value at 2 for $5!

People always ask, "what's good right now?" And the answer "right now" is citrus. These are minneola tangerines, which are awesome. But so are the navels, honey tangerines, and mandarins.

  1. I just found a gluten free banana bread recipe that's outrageously delicious! It's here:

  2. Some interesting and useful information on PLU stickers that appear on produce in your grocery store –

    http://www.seriouseats.com/2008/04/how-to-decode-plu-stickers-on-produce.html

Conventional produce gets a four-digit number.
Organic produce gets a five-digit number that starts with 9. Genetically modified items also get a five-digit code, but that code starts with 8.

    Examples
    4139: Conventional Granny Smith apple
    94139: Organic Granny Smith
    84139: GMO Granny Smith
