Summer Work

One of the little joys of homeownership: our new little vegetable garden.  We've got tomatoes, jalapenos, pickling cukes, squash, zucchini, and tons of herbs in pots on the side.  Even better than the fresh veggies is the kid's curiosity and excitement watching the veggies grow plump and ripe.

So when do tomatoes turn red?

The ones in Yakima are already there.  CAN THESE, people!  We've loved our stash of canned tomatoes from last year and really need to get in gear to do some more canning. It's a lot of work now, but let me tell you - during that snow storm last winter, I pulled out a jar of summer peaches and it was amazing.

Sigh... when I look at these pictures now all I can think of is all the work I should be doing.  Canning pickles, for example.

Sure, right after I can the Yakima peaches (waiting for freestone!) and apricots...

.. and freeze more blueberries, and....

I give up!  I hope you're doing better at keeping up this year than I am.  It's only August 6th, but today it felt like just the tiniest bit of fall was in the air...
